Alice b 27 Oct 1763
Edward Pickering / Abigail Mendon
From Alice Palladini's book
130. Alse6 (Alice,Alfe, Alce, Else) Pickering, Edward Jr.5,
EDWARD4, BENJAMIN3, JOHN2, JOHN1
b. 27 Oct. 1763, Mendon,Ma.; d. ?
m. ? 12 Nov. 1781, Mendon,Ma.? Jotham Pickering, son of
Jonathan & Elizabeth (Hunt) Pickering? (see following)
b. ca 1760/61, pos. Mendon,Ma.
I am going to try to explain the mystery surrounding this couple, as
best I can, from the records and writings, I have on this couple. However; it is
just supposition and there is no proof, only speculation.
Also was called Alfe in her father's will. Vital records are for Alice,
for birth, dau. of Edward & Abigail; Mendon,V.R.'s; and Else for the marriage to
Jotham Pickering; Mendon,V.R.'S; Claude Barlow's Pickering Gen., states; " Else
is indeed Alse, dau. of Edward Jr. who mar. Jotham Pickering. "but who is
Jotham? Alfe's sisters were maiden ladies, named Hannah & Comfort Pickering, in
their father's will. Alfe was also named Alfe Pickering in her father's will.
Are we to assume, "she was not a maiden lady, also? "If she had married Jotham
Pickering, her name would of been Pickering, also.
Is Jotham, who has a Rev. War record from Mendon, Ma. Jonathan's son;
(Jotham or Jonathan??) or are Jonathan and Jotham, two different men? Is Alfe,
Alice or Else dau. of Edward Jr.?
In the 1790 Census, Edward Jr. had 3 females including head of family in
his household. This tells us probably only 2 daughters were still at home, in
1790. The marriage for Else and Jotham took place in 1781.
___________________________________________________________119
There isn't any Jotham Pickering listed as residing in Mendon, in 1790
to 1850 Census. However; Jotham is mentioned in the Annals of Mendon and he and
Jonathan are living on the same land. There was a Jonathan, who lived in the 6th
district near the School House that was located at the foot of the now Pickering
Rd. Hill, called So. Mendon, at that time.
Jotham and Alfe would of been first cousins. Claude Barlow and Leona
(Pickering) Thomas have some writings on the unpublished genealogy, that I have.
It seems both researched quite thoroughly trying to place Else and Jotham into
the known Mendon families. The conclusion was that Else was indeed Alfe, but
they could never quite place Jotham. I say Jotham is the son of Jonathan
Pickering, and the Rev. record is for Jonathan's son Jotham and the Annals of
Mendon, Rev. War records maybe for Jonathan Sr. and his sons name was Jotham not
Jonathan.
And yes, he did marry his first cousin, Alice (Else, Alfe, Alice)
Pickering. (see following Jotham) But none of this can be proved at this time.
