Web Site Philosophy
Some thoughts on web site building at DSData
- The intent of the site is that it will primarily be an
information content provider.
- Persons who supply information content should be acknowledged.
Apologies are given to those people whose names and details
were not completed recorded early in the research efforts.
- Pages should be designed to be viewable with the widest
possible number of web browsers.
No features which are
specific to a particular browser should be used.
Ideally users of the character-based browser "lynx" should
be able to navigate the site and obtain information.
- At the same time, it is acknowledged that appearance (and therefore
the use of colour and graphics) is an important part of the friendliness
(and repeat usage) of the site.
- Pages should load quickly. Not everyone has the current
cutting edge technology for modems nor are all ISPs created
equal in providing bandwith to their clients. Graphics
used to highlight pages and navigation should be consistently
applied.
- Simple text extraction or image copying can be done by almost
anyone with access to the basic information being presented.
Attempt to present any information in a more readable format.
- Bulk copying of information either for or from this
site should be discouraged.
With respect to family history information, the presentation of
basic birth,
death and marriage data is considered crucial to everyone's
research. Data on individiuals and families where the
entire reference or supporting text information is a
researcher's name with a link to
another web page will be considered acceptable use of information.
The Basic Technical Details
The web pages are displayed in DSData's offices using Apache Version
1.3.2 as a web server with SCO UNIX (OpenServer 5.0.0) providing the
network service. While
Netscape Navigator is DSData's
preferred browser,
browsers from Microsoft and IBM are also used to review the page format
and display.
Email and news feeds are handled via a UUCP feed
from Dialix Services, Perth.
Originallly family history data was maintained using PAF version 2.2. The
information was exported using the GEDCOM format capabilities of PAF.
A "C" program was written to transfer the data from the GEDCOM format
into a form able to be imported into the CA-Ingres
relational tables. A program using the native CA-Ingres (OpenRoad)
development tools on the Windows NT and SCO UNIX platforms
is being written to replace the need to rely on PAF.
Ths will permit expansion of the data to include information from multiple
contributors and the storage of data on (many, many) more than 10,000 persons.
Thanks are given to Omen Net of Perth,
Western Australia, which
provides the current web hosting for the site.
If you feel strongly about
this site (either for the good or the bad :-) feel free to stop by their site
and let them know.
Of course, DSData would like to know your feelings
as well.
Enjoy browsing though the information available on the site.
If you would like more information on the tools used to generate these pages,
or to have data included in the family history pages, please send
email to the administrator.
