This view is to the north from the southern edge of the grove.
The larger trees are tiny oil Kalamata, having been in the ground 18 months.
The Manzanillo trees are to the left, Paragon to the right.
During the first summer we lost 2 of the 44 Kalamata trees, primarily
because they were not watered sufficiently and we were not prepared to
handle the wingless grasshoppers. One or two other trees probably should
have been replaced, but have now recovered and are only slightly smaller
than the majority.

Three of the approximately 260 Manzanillo trees were eaten by rabbits and/or
kangaroos,
but the addition of the (green) tree guards seems to have solved that problem.
Two others died and were replaced. Approximately another dozen trees
will be replaced simply because they are not thriving. The trees
being replaced will be moved to the southern end of the grove where a
wind break / shelter belt is being planted.
Two of the approximately 260 Paragon trees have died. Another ten will be replaced as not thriving and will also go into the shelter belt. The trees in the northeastern corner were planted last (about two months after the first) and also sufferred the worst from the summer's invasion of grasshoppers. But even these are starting to show signs of vigourous growth.
